Chapter 5. Configuring AgileRss

General Preferences

The configuration of AgileRss can be made by the user through the panel of preferences available in the Preferences window that can be opened by choosing option "Preferences" from "Main" main menu. The panel of preferences is presented in the image below.

Using this panel one can configure the functional parameters of the application as follows:

  1. Settings - allows customization of the startup options. For any update of these options it is recommended to restart the application so that the modification(s) to be effective.

    • Language

      The user can change the language by selecting it from language panel. Languages available in default distribution are Romania and English

    • Check For New Version At Startup

      If this option is enabled agileRss will look if there is released another new version on product web site, and if there is , it will prompt you with the information about the new version

    • System Tray Integration

      Option that enables agileRss to put it's icon in your system tray bar. System tray integration feature also a popup menu on the system tray icon, that enables you fast access to preferences window and enclosures downloads window.

      In this mode agileRss default close window button will be changed to minimize, so if you want to close agileRss it will be necessarily

    • Run At System Startup

      Enables agileRss to start automaticaly when your computer starts (when you log on to computer). This option is enable only on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux with Gnome or KDE interface

    • Notify New Articles

      When agileRss finds new articles ,if this option is enabled , it will open a notification window on the right side of the screen where it will display all new articles groupped on feeds for 3 seconds, and then it will disapear.

    • Start in Tray

      By enabling this option agileRss will start minimized in your system tray bar, showing the specific icon.

    • Enable Bookmarklet Autodiscovery

      This option opens TCP port 7810 on local computer in order to listen for adition of url where to discover rss feeds. To use the autodiscover option you must add a new bookmark in your browser having this text "javascript:void(location.href='http://127.0.0.1:7810/?action=autodiscovery&rootUrl='+window.location.href)" specified as location, after this , when you have opended a page in browser and want to retrive all rss links from that page you just press the bookmark added before - the agileRss reader must be running!. After you set this option in order to take efect you must restart agilerss.

    • Show Tip Of The Day At Startup

      Option that enable agilerss to show at startup a window with most common tasks that can be executed with it.

    • Application Directory

      You can choose a directory where AgileRss stores its feeds and articles, it can be different from the one created by default. If you specify a directory used with an older version of AgileRss then you will be prompted for update. If the specified directory does not contain any data, then a new date will be created. Uninstalling applicatiion this directory will be removed if you specify that.

  2. Download - enable customisation of enclosures download manager behaviour

    • Maximum simultaneous downloads

      Number of simultaneous downloads can be modified - depending on your specific internet bandwith access

    • Save unfinished downloads

      If this option is checked at exist agilerss enclosures download manager will save all started and unfinished downloads, in order to restart them or continue if it is possible. Resuming of stopped download is posible only if source address enables this support.

  3. Browser - specific browser settings

    • Use User Specified Browsser

      This option enables agilerss to use a user specified browser other than the system default one. The browser that agilerss will use in case that this option is checked is that identified by the path specified at the below position from the same window

    • User Specified Browser Path

      Specifies the browser path to be used in case that "Use User Specified Browsser" option is selected

    • User Specified Browser Parameters

      When it is used a user specified browser it is posible to set to it another option by passing to it some parameters specified in this line. "{URL}" is to be used as substitute for the internet address to be opened. If not present, "{URL}" is to be appended as the last parameter when using the user browser.

  4. Network - specific access settings for the computers behind a firewall. Network settings can be different for http access and FTP access

    • Use Proxy

      Option that enable agileRss to use proxy with the settings specified below

    • Proxy Host

      Address of the proxy host, it can be IP address or a full qualified computer name

    • Proxy Port

      Numeric port access of proxy host access

    • Non Proxy Hosts

      Let user to specify hosts with direct access - where is no need to use a proxy server (eq. local network)

  5. Ticker - settings for ticker band

    • Maximum Number Of Scrolled Articles

      Number of visible scrolled articles - displayed in the ticker band

    • Enable Ticker At Application Startup

      If this option is enabled then the ticker component will start at application startup and all new articles received by agilerss will be displayed or cached in ticker band. Otherwise the new articles received by agilerss will not be displayed in the ticker band even if the ticker is enabled using menu action from "Tools" menu. Only after ticker is enabled it will receive articles to scroll them.

    • Number Of Show Times Of Unread Articles

      If articles number received by agilerss in a session is bigger than the value of 'Maximum Number Of Scrolled Articles' it will be cached and displayed for 'Number Of Show Times Of Unread Articles' times after this it will be removed from ticker band and cache. Using this option the ticker band will scroll between two refreshes only the latest 'n' articles.

    • Text Color; Background Text Color; Selection Color; Font

      Set the appearence of the ticker band. All these values can be changed by pressing '...' button and chose from there the preffered value.

    • Ticker Position

      Set the position of the ticker band TOP or BOTTOM

    • Ticker Speed

      Option to change the speed of scrolling articles contained in the ticker band

    • Load Previously Unread Articles at Startup

      If when agileRss is starting are there any unread articles and this option is selected, then the ticker band will scroll by default at startup these unread articles.

    • Stop Ticker On Mouse Over

      Option that enables ticker band to be stoped when the mouse position is over the band.

  6. Theme Settings - chose icons theme for agileRss buttons. If requires application restart.

  7. User Interface - interface selection from the available interfaces

  8. Fonts - Changes font by pressing "..." button

  9. Toolbars - customize the number of buttons contained by each toolbar and if to show text near icons or not

    You can add buttons to custom tool bar after you have it on the dynamic toolbar (just used), then click right mouse button over the button that you want to be added and select "Add action to custom toolbar".

    If this option is enabled then below every button on the toolbar will be placed its label

    Set maximum number of action that can be stored on dynamic toolbar

    Customized toolbar after you place on it a number of buttons at exit will be stored in order to be available at next applictaion startup.

  10. Feeds - default feeds settings

    • Articles Persistence For Any Feed. There are available four options:

      • Keep all - don't remove any article. The only limit is the available memory (the application is configured to use maximum 128MB);

      • Limit by number - the maximum number of stored articles is the one provided through option "Limit Number To";

      • Limit by age - keep only the articles whose publication date is not older than the value provided through option "Delete Older Than (days)".

      • By enabling the option "Do Not Clean Unread Articles" the unread articles are simply ignored while running the process for cleaning the articles, that is the specified policy applies only to articles marked as read.

      The system performs the cleaning of articles on every update of the persistence policy and just before closing the application;

    • Feed Refresh Interval - specifies the way feeds are checked for new articles. The specifed behaviour applies to all newly added feeds and to those whose refresh interval is set to "Default update interval". The user may choose to use a 60 minutes refresh interval (option "Default refresh interval"), to never update feeds (option "No refresh") or to check the feeds for new articles on a specified interval (using option "Refresh Interval (minutes") );

      Any change of the above settings take immediate effect after pressing the "Apply" button.

    • Mark All Articles As Read On Exit - before exiting the application and just after applying the cleanup policy all unread articles are to be marked as read;

    • Refresh Feeds At Startup - initiate an automatic refresh of all feeds at application startup (feeds whose refresh interval is set to 'no refresh' are not to be refreshed).
